Vapun juhlintaa - Celebrating May day

Vappua juhlitaan joka vuosi ja nyt oli taas sen aika. MJ pääsi siis luonnollisesti juhlistamaan vappua uusien ystäviensä kanssa :) Grillausta, makoisaa ruokaa ja juomaa sekä hyvä seura! Tässä hieman tunnelmia vietetyistä juhlista. Toivottavasti ei mennyt kovin myöhään ;)

Perinteisesti suomalaiseen vappuun kuuluu myös ilmapallot, sima ja tippaleivät. Jälleen siis uusia makuja muistoksi MJ:lle :)


May Day / Walpurgis night / The first of May is celebrated every year and now was the time for it. MJ got to celebrate it with her new friends :) Some barbecue, tasteful food and drinks and good company! Here are some feelings from the party. I hope they didn't celebrate too late ;)

Traditional Finnish May Day includes balloons, mead and funnel cake (sorry, I'm too lazy to write about those now so I put links on each of the terms if you're interested to read more about those). Some new flavors for MJ to memorize :)

Pääsiäisviikonloppu - The Easter Weekend

Pikainen postaus pääsiäisestä. Pääsiäisviikonloppu meni rauhallisissa merkeissä. Olimme kotona ja vietimme yhteistä aikaa perheen kesken. MJ pääsi maistelemaan mämmiä ensimmäistä kertaa ja oli sanaton :D Tarjosin mämmin kera vaniljakastiketta ja lopulta MJ oli sitä mieltä, että vaikka mämmi olikin aluksi outoa, oli se lopulta ihan hyvää. Lisäksi MJ halusi avata muutaman yllätysmunankin :)

Just a quick post about Easter. Easter weekend went quietly and smoothly. We were at home and spent some quality time with the family. MJ tasted malted rye/rye pudding (traditional Finnish Easter dessert made from rye flour) for the first time and she was speechless :D I served the "pudding" with vanilla sauce and though MJ said that it was a bit weird at first, still and all it was rather good. MJ opened a couple of surprise eggs too :)

Palmusunnuntai - Palm Sunday

Eilen oli palmusunnuntai. Pääsiäisen aikaan liittyy vahvoja perinteitä ja yksi niistä on lasten virpomisperinne. Kotiseudullani virpojat kulkevat nimenomaan palmusunnuntaina. Jossakin muualla Suomessa virpojat liikkuvat mm. lankalauantaina. Tottakai Mini Jazzi täytyi tutustuttaa tähän perinteeseen! :) Suomalaisille virpominen on tuttua, mutta koska aion kirjoittaa aiheesta joka tapauksessa englanninkielisille lukijoilleni, kirjoitan siitä hieman myös suomeksi, joten koittakaa kestää :)

Virpomisen perinne on lähtöisin kaukaa. Pääsiäisvitsat tunnettiin jo 500-luvulla ja varsinaisen virpomisen perinteet ovat muuttuneet ajan saatossa useita eri kertoja. Käsitykseni on, että alunperin pääsiäisvitsat siunattiin jumalanpalveluksissa ja sen jälkeen niillä on voitu tuoda ihmisille terveyttä ja karkottaa pahaa. Vitsoissa uskottiin olevan taikavoimia. Myöhemmässä vaiheessa virpojille on alettu antaa palkkana esimerkiksi ruokaa tai pieni määrä rahaa. On myös sanottu, että virpominen on sekoitus useampaa eri kansanperinnettä, joten perinteet poikkeavat toisistaan myös eri alueilla. Tarkkaa tietoa minulla ei tuon ajan virpomisesta ole, joten jos haluat jakaa virpomistietoutta kanssani, luen mielelläni perinteeseen liittyviä kommentteja :)

Nykyään virpojat pukeutuvat pääsiäisnoidiksi eli trulleiksi ja ottavat virpomiskierrokselle mukaan koristeltuja pajunvitsoja sekä korin tai kahvipannun palkkojen keruuta varten. Virpojat kiertävät naapurustossa ovelta ovelle toivottaen pajunvitsoilla onnea ja terveyttä virvottavalle. Tämän jälkeen virpoja antaa koristellut pajunvitsan virvottavalle ja saa palkaksi yleensä pääsiäismunia, karkkeja tai muuta pientä pääsiäiseen liittyvää. Virvontaloruja on useita erilaisia, mutta tyypillisin virvontaloru asuinseudullani kuulu näin:

"Virvon varvon,
tuoreeks terveeks,
tulevaks vuodeks.
Vitsa sulle,
palkka mulle."

MJ oli innoissaan päästessään kokeilemaan pääsiäisen perinnettä. Hän sai omat pienet vitsat ja palkkaakin tehdystä työstä ;)

Yesterday was Palm Sunday. There are strong traditions concerning Easter and one of them is children conducting a Finnish Easter tradition. I think there isn't a correct word for that in English... You could compare it to Halloween trick or treating except this isn't about tricks, it's about promising good thing to come. In my home town children do this on Palm Sunday but some place else in Finland they do it for example on Holy Saturday. Of course I had to introduce this tradition to MJ! :) Finnish people know what this is about but because I'm going to write something about it in English, I will write about it in Finnish too, so bear with me :)

The tradition originates from far, far away. The Easter willow twigs were known already in the 500s and actual traditions concerning this matter have changed many times during years. In my understanding, the Easter twigs were originally blessed in church service. After that someone could bring health or banish evil spirits and other bad things with them. People believed that there was magical power in those twigs. Later on people began to give for example food or little money in return for those Easter twigs and "spells". It's been said that this tradition is a mix of many different Easter traditions and these traditions differ according to regions as well. I don't have certain and exact information about this tradition in the old times so if you want to tell me something about it I'd be more than happy to read your comments :)

Nowadays the children wear kind of a witch costumes (trulli is a word that I can't translate to English). They have ornamented willow twigs and a basket or a coffee pot with them (the basket or the coffee pot is for collecting candy). They go from door to door wishing good luck and health for the year to come, they give the twig to someone and in return they get some chocolate eggs, candy or some other Easter goodies. There are many kind of rhymes for wishing good luck and health and there is one common above in Finnish. I'm sorry that I can't translate the rhyme. It's too hard because there aren't such words in English that would be similar to those Finnish words. Anyhow, it's about wishing someone health and happiness for the year to come and giving the willow twig and asking something in return.

MJ was so excited when she got this experience about our Easter tradition. She got her own little ornamented willow twigs and earned some chocolate eggs ;)

Hyvän yön unet - A Good Night Sleep

Mini Jazzi oli matkasta väsynyt ja nukkui melkein kellon ympäri. Annoimme MJ:n siis nukkua ensimmäisen yön omassa rauhassa. Maailmanympärysmatka alkaa jo hieman uuvuttaa. Matkaa on taittunut jo tuhansia kilometrejä, mutta vielä MJ jaksaa innolla vierailla jäljellä olevat kohteet :)

Kun yö oli nukuttu hyvin ja aamupala tarjoiltu, kävimme mutkan Rakentajamessuilla. Meillä on kohtapuoliin edessä ikkuna- ja kattoremonttia, joten MJ pääsi tuomaroimaan, ikkunoiden värejä ja kattomateriaaleja. Muuten taidetaan ottaa viikonloppu rennosti. Katsotaan joku hyvä elokuva ja ehkä napostellaan jotain pientä hyvää :)

Mini Jazzi was tired from the trip and slept almost around the clock. We let her sleep in her own privacy for the first night. The trip around the world is starting to be a bit exhausting. She's traveled thousands of miles but however she's eager to visit all the places that are still ahead :)

When she'd had a good night sleep and eaten breakfast we went to Construction and Repair Fair. We are going to do some renovation/repairing for our house. We are going to renew our windows and roof so MJ got to be the judge when we chose window colors and roof materials. Besides that we are going to relax for the weekend. Maybe we'll watch a good movie and snack something delicious :)

Vihdoin - At Last

Mini Jazzi on täällä! Tätä hetkeä on odotettu niiiin pitkään, mutta silti se tuli niin yllättäen :D Annan MJ:n levätä hetken matkan jäljiltä ennenkuin alan kyselemään kuulumisia ja esittelemään paikkoja ;)

Voi jestas! Voiko se olla... - OMG! Can it be...

Sain postista pakettikortin. En ole tietääkseni tilannut tai ostanut mitään. Painoakin paketilla on kortin mukaan yli kilon verran! :O En ehdi pakettia tänään hakemaan, joten joudun jännittämään huomiseen. Arvailen, arvailen...voisiko se olla...? ;)

I got a package card from the Post Office. I haven't ordered or bought anything,  as far as I know. It also weights over a kilo according to the package card! :O I don't have time to get the package today so I have to wait in excitement till tomorrow. I'm guessing, I'm guessing...could it be...? ;)

Joulua edeltävä arvonta - The Give-away Before Christmas

Pidin arvonnan ennen joulua ja silloin jäi laittamatta kuvia voitoista. Tässäpä muutama kuva niistä :) Mare sai päiväpeiton ja pienen pienen mummonmökin. Renille lähti macrame-pöllö. Maren palkinto päätyi Eevertin taloon ja siitä paremmin kertomusta ja kuvia TÄÄLLÄ

I had a give-away before Christmas and I forgot to put here some pics about those prizes. Here are a few :) Mare got a blanket and a tiny granny's cottage. Ren got a macrame owl. Mare's prize got it's way to Eevert's house. You can read about and see better pictures of it HERE.

Ilman nettiä - Without Internet

Meillä on netti poikki kotona jonkin aikaa ja en ole päässyt/pääse kirjoittelemaan :( Kirjoitettavaa olisi kovasti! Unohdin ennen joulua mm. näyttää, mitä lähetin silloisen kilpailun voittajille. Lisäksi loput kalenteriluukut aion vielä lisätä, vaikka joulu on jo ohi :D Olen myös jatkanut taloprojektejani, joten näitä tiedossa heti, kunhan pääsen takaisin internetin ihmeelliseen maailmaan! Siihen asti, mukavia mineilyhetkiä!

Tässä pienet makramee-korut, jotka olen myös tässä välillä tehnyt. Rintakoru ja siihen sopivat korvakorut.

We don't have Internet at home so I haven't been able to write :( I would have much to write about! I forgot to show what I sent to those two winners before Christmas. And I'm going to put the missing calendar doors here as well even if Christmas is long gone now :D I've made progress with my house projects so these are few things which I'm going to write about when I get back to Internets supercalifragilisticexpialidocious world! Until then, have the best time making miniatures!

Pieni vahinko - A Little Accident

En ole vähään aikaan pystynyt tekemään mini juttuja, enkä ole siksi myöskään hirveästi kirjoitellut. Sattuipa nimittäin niin, että "puukotin" itseäni vahingossa ja päädyin sairaalan päivystykseen. Nyt käsi alkaa olla jo siinä kunnossa, että sillä voi jotain tehdäkin. Paranee siis ihan mukavasti. Mutta eikös se niin ole, että tekevälle sattuu! :) Pari viikkoa hyvää joulupakettien teko aikaa meni nyt niin sanotusti hukkaan, mutta tästä on hyvä jatkaa. Vielä olen hieman käsipuoli, mutta kyllä tämä tästä :)

I haven't been able to do miniatures for a while and that's why I haven't written either. There was a little miniature making accident. I accidentally "stabbed" myself and had to go to ER. Now my hand is starting to be in kind of a good condition so that I can do something with it. It's getting better quite nicely. Well, accidents happen! I lost a couple of good mini-making weeks but it's good to go on from here. I'm still a bit handless but everything is going to just fine :)

Mare arvasi 1200 ja päreitä on kaikenkaikkiaan 1069. Osui siis todella lähelle! Hyvänä kakkosena tuli Ren, joka arvasi 800 ja rapiat. Laittanen siis myös hänelle pientä yllätystä :) Laitatteko minulle yhteystietonne!

Mare guessed 1200 and there are altogether 1069 shingles. It was really close! The second was Ren, who guessed a bit over 800. I'll send a little surprise to her as well :)

Palkinnot paljastan vasta sitten, kun olen varma, että voittajat ovat nähneet ne ensin itse ;)
